Welcome to the Eye Research Unit of the Dept. of Ophthalmology, University of Mainz.

Our main interests include glaucoma, tear film, neuroprotection, proteomics, and bioinformatics.

As a part of the Dept. of Ophthalmology, we are attempting to close the gap between clinical and basic sciences. We perform both clinical trials and basic science research.

Ongoing projects within our unit are:

    • Glaucoma Is there an underlying autoimmune component in the glaucoma disease? Can the glaucoma related autoantibodies serve as early-diagnosis and follow-up markers of the disease?
    • Tear film Beside the important role of tear film in ocular surface diseases, we are investigating if the tear film can be used for non-invasive diagnostic approaches not only in eye diseases.
    • Immunoproteomics profiling
    • Basic Sciences: Proteomics The analysis of proteins is one the most challenging approaches in the current decade. Our unit attempts to use the most state of the art proteomics methods to analyze protein expression changes in eye-diseases.
    • Basic Sciences: Bioinformatics In the last years, our unit could develop new algorithms that allow the comparative analysis of complex autoantibody profiles for the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases and for a better understanding of the pathogenesis. These algorithms are currently used in international cooperations.
    • Combined clinical trials
